On July 5, 2023, Dr. Sutat Weesakul, Director of Hydro-Informatics Institute (HII), was invited to be a guest lecturer at the conference of leading water organizations in the Mekong River Basin. The conference, titled ‘Water accounting in the GMS – Policy implications for water, food, and energy security in a changing climate,’ took place at the Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel. The event was a practical meeting that brought together leading water organizations from countries in the Mekong River Basin, such as Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and China, and was organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The primary focus of the conference was to exchange knowledge and experiences related to water accounting, which is essential for analyzing water security in each country. This initiative is part of FAO’s Water Scarcity Program.
During the seminar, Dr. Sutat discussed the overall national water management, particularly the National Hydroinformatics Data Center (NHC), and highlighted the bottom-up approach. He provided an example of the community of Sa Roi in Phrae Province, Thailand, which has achieved water security by applying technology and water information to analyze water systems and accounts. This community serves as a successful model aligning with the objectives of the conference.
